Event 4 MenThe point score before the final round of this seasons beko Home Appliances Ocean Thunder Surfboat Series promised an exciting finale and Australia’s elite level surfrowers delivered on that promise today. With $60,000.00 in prizemoney and a season’s worth of bragging rights on the line, organisers made the decision to avoid Dee Why’s rough seas and transfer the event to the beautiful one metre rolling waves and tremendous “runners” of nearby Collaroy.

The Men’s morning six preliminary rounds, saw some amazing displays of surf rowing with a number of surprise results.  Series leaders, defending Ocean Thunder and Australian Champions 360 Financial – Currumbin (Clark) finished the morning in an uncustomary ninth position. Adding to that shock were the crews running second and third place in the overall series Dial before You Dig - Mona Vale (Collins) and Rocks Brewing - Mona Vale (Halangahu) scraping through the cut, finishing the morning in fifteenth and eighteenth places respectively.

The morning’s standout performers included A Curtains & Blinds – Currumbin (Hickey), ASF – Currumbin (Hickey), Quick Towing – Collaroy (Scott) and Bullock – Bilgola (Gill) who each finished with four wins. A Curtains & Blinds – Currumbin (Wildman) topped the preliminary point score with two seconds accompanying their four wins. Other qualifiers for the afternoon session (in order) were Bronte SLSC - Bronte, Dial Before You Dig - Batemans Bay, Design Bathware - Corrimal, The Beach Club, Collaroy – XXXX Gold – Collaroy , 360 Financial - Currumbin, RXP Services - Torquay, RMB Lawyers - Bulli, Staminade Quenchers - Northcliffe (Claypham), Smith & Sons Renovations & Extensions - Palm Beach, beko Home Appliances – Freshwater, Dial Before You Dig - Mona Vale, Reilly & Sons Food Services - Dee Why, 7 News - Cronulla, Rocks Brewing - Mona Vale, Dial Before You Dig – Austinmer and Maher Group - North Cronulla.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  To all competitors, team managers, officials & spectators

A decision was made this afternoon (Friday 5 Feb) that beko Ocean Thunder Surf Boat Series Event # 4 will being held on Saturday 6 February 2016 will be moved to Collaroy Beach.

Please note that there are works being conducted between the Collaroy SLSC & The Beach Club, Collaroy. Parking options are Fishermans beach near boat ramp behind Long Reef Golf Club, Council car park to the North of Collaroy Shops or street parking.  Normal Parking restrictions will apply.

Event 2 actionThere had been plenty of talk as to who would stop The Mighty Currumbin Vikings domination of this season’s beko Home Appliances Ocean Thunder Surfboat Series.

It seemed Huey, God of the waves answered the call of the rest of Australia’s surf rowing elite when they arrived at today’s second round event.  Sydney’s Dee Why beach put on a spectacular and incredibly difficult wave under clear blue skies.

The Men’s morning six preliminary rounds, saw some spectacular racing but also saw the cream rise to the top. The standouts in the morning rounds included event one winners 360 Financial - Currumbin, last season’s Ocean Thunder and Australian Champions this seasons event one winners, with an incredible six wins from six races, continuing their domination of the event. Rocks Brewing -Mona Vale impressed with four wins, a second and a third. A Curtains & Blinds - Currumbin relished in the conditions with three wins and three seconds finishing the morning in third position. Completing the coveted top four were ASF - Currumbin with three wins, two seconds and a third from their six preliminary rounds.  

Other qualifiers for the afternoon session (in order) were Quick Towing - Collaroy, Dial Before You Dig - Austinmer, Team Investible - Coogee, Bronte SLSC - Bronte, RMB Lawyers - Bulli, Bullock - Bilgola, Dial Before You Dig - Mona Vale, Surfair Beach Hotel - Maroochydore, The Beach Club, Collaroy – XXXX Gold - Collaroy, RXP Services - Torquay, Maher Group - North Cronulla, Aptus Accounting - South Narrabeen, Smith & Sons Renovations & Extensions - Palm Beach , beko -Freshwater, Reilly & Sons Food Services - Dee Why and Carpet Court - Rosebud.

The Women’s morning five preliminary rounds were dominated by Manly Wharf Hotel - Manly with Back to Balance - North Cronulla, Blue Stone Homes - Bilgola and beko - Northcliffe completing the top four.

Other qualifiers for the Women’s afternoon session included (in order) Kone Elevators - Mona Vale, APB Group Hunters - Currumbin, beko - South Curl Curl, Blackmores - Bilgola, budgySmuggler.com - Palm Beach, Staminade Quenchers QLD - Currumbin, Nexba - Manly and The Beach Club, Collaroy – XXXX Gold - Collaroy. Shock elimination of the day were event one winners and perennial finalists Jacoars Austinmer.

Following a gruelling series of elimination, quarter and semi-finals incredibly the Men’s Final six again comprised two pairs of crews (Mona Vale & Currumbin) taking up four of the six places. Currumbin showed their incredible depth by this time providing ASF - Currumbin, who finished 19th in event one to the final along with club mates and series leaders 360 Financial - Currumbin. Rocks Brewing - Mona Vale, Dial Before You Dig - Austinmer, Surfair Beach Hotel - Maroochydore and Dial Before You Dig - Mona Vale complete the line-up for the mens final.

The Women’s single race final was contested by The Beach Club, Collaroy – XXXX Gold - Collaroy, beko - South Curl Curl, beko - Northcliffe, Back to Balance - North Cronulla, Manly Wharf Hotel - Manly and APB Group Hunters - Currumbin. An incredible display of how to get the best out of what Mother Nature provides saw APB Group Hunters – Currumbin dominate the final row home to win comfortably from Back to Balance - North Cronulla and Manly Wharf Hotel – Manly.

Event 1 Wrap Up and Results - Vikings Raid!

This seasons beko Home Appliances Ocean Thunder Surfboat Series got off to a cracking start today at Sydney’s Dee Why Beach. A record 28 Men’s & 18 Women’s elite level crews, battled unpredictable one metre waves in windy choppy conditions.

Event 1 Mens Winners - 360 Financial - Currumbin (Clark) The Men’s morning six preliminary rounds, saw the red hot field whittled down to twenty qualifiers for the afternoon’s finals. The standouts in the morning session included 360 Financial Services – Currumbin (Clark), last season’s Ocean Thunder and Australian Champions, with an incredible six wins from six races.  This crew is sure to continue their domination of elite level men’s rowing this season. Club mates, A Curtains & Blinds – Currumbin (Wildman) finished the morning in second position with five wins and a third placing. Dial Before You Dig - Mona Vale (Collins), also finishing the morning with five wins and a fourth placing. Last season’s Australian Under 23 Champions Quick Towing - Collaroy (Scott) were in form as well with three wins, two seconds and a third to complete the coveted top four.

Other qualifiers for the afternoon session (in order) were Design Bathware - Corrimal, Bullock – Bilgola (Gill) , Coogee SLSC, Smith & Sons Renovations & Extensions - Palm Beach, Dial Before You Dig - Austinmer, RXP Services - Torquay, Rocks Brewing - Mona Vale (Halangalu), Reilly & Sons Food Services - Dee Why, Aptus Accounting - South Narrabeen, RMB Lawyers - Bulli, Surfair Beach Hotel - Maroochydore, ASF - Currumbin (Hickey) , Staminade Quenchers - Alexandra Headlands (Davies), 7 News - Cronulla, Bronte SLSC & Maher Group - North Cronulla.

The Women’s morning five preliminary rounds were dominated by two crews budgySmuggler.com - Palm Beach and Currumbin Hunters - Currumbin, both crews finishing the morning with four wins and a second place.

Other qualifiers for the Women’s afternoon session included (in order) last season’s Ocean Thunder champions Back to Balance - North Cronulla, Jacoars - Austinmer, Manly Wharf Hotel – Manly (Perry), last seasons Australian Champions beko - South Curl Curl, Blackmores – Bilgola (McManus), TJS Services – Currumbin (Hickey), Dial Before You Dig - Mona Vale (Halangahu), beko - Northcliffe, KONE Elevators - Mona Vale & NTT Communications - Warriewood.

2014 Event 3 Wrap Up, Results & Pointscore

Saturday, 11th January 2014: Competitors in event three of todays Dial Before You Dig Ocean Thunder were greeted with glorious sunshine and small surf conditions for today’s competition.  With $60,000.00 in prize money up for grabs the elite of Australia’s surf rowing community were on hand to witness what turned out to be an extraordinary days racing.

The Mens morning preliminary rounds saw series equal leaders The Beach Club, Collaroy XXXX Gold (Collaroy) and Starrett (Batemans Bay) battle it out for bragging rights.

Both crews achieving five wins and a second from the mornings six rounds. An innovative format saw the top eight Mens crews from the morning rounds avoid a cut throat elimination round. Joining  The Beach Club Collaroy, XXXX Gold (Collaroy) and Starrett (Batemans Bay) in the top eight were Top Fun (Rosebud), CrossFit Athletic (Bilgola), Dial Before You Dig (Mona Vale), Schick Hydro (Bronte), Brookvale Sand (North Steyne) and Trayd Pools (North Cronulla). Apart from the joint series leaders it was the Victorians from Rosebud who had most of the field concerned after some eye catching performances.

Other qualifiers for the afternoon finals included Dial Before You Dig (Bondi), Dee Why SLSC (Dee Why), Channel 7 News (Cronulla), Jacoars (Austinmer), Southern Fasteners (North Cronulla), Fairy Meadow Plumbing (Corrimal), Military History Tours (North Bondi) and Link Project Marketing/Science in Sport (Mona Vale).
