Moruya Digs Deep for Event 2....

Event two of this years ATIVO Ocean Thunder was held today on Sydney's Dee Why beach in warm conditions in tiny surf.

In the Men's division of racing, FGI (Bilgola) dominated the five preliminary rounds with four wins and a second. Dial Before You Dig (Moruya) coming in a close second with four wins and a fourth, One Life (Batemans Bay) continued their outstanding form with three wins, a second and a third. Event one winners Hogs Breath Cafe (Mona Vale) qualified for the finals in eight position with XXXX Gold (Dee Why) who finished third in event one surprisingly eliminated. The five preliminary rounds in flat conditions were very tight, in one instance four one hundredth of second separated three crews.

Dial Before You Dig - MoruyaATIVO B (Austinmer), ATIVO A (Austinmer), Viatek (Dixon Park), One Life (Batemans Bay), Dial Before You Dig (Moruya) & Ettamogah Mob (Avoca) qualified for the final which consisted of a gut wrenching double race. Ettamogah Mob (Avoca) led the race from the outset, closely pursued by One Life (Batemans Bay) & Dial Before You Dig (Moruya). In an epic struggle that had the crowd on its feet right to the end, Dial Before You Dig (Moruya) surged to slim lead with about twenty metres to go, claiming victory from Ettamogah Mob (Avoca) & One Life (Batemans Bay).

In the Women's division, event one winners Team Navy (South Curl Curl) dominated the four preliminary rounds with four wins. Like their male counterparts FGI (Bilgola) showed their class with two wins and two seconds, Southern Fasteners (McMasters Beach) also finishing the preliminary rounds with two wins and two seconds.

Banana Boat (Bronte), Ettamogah Mob (Avoca), Southern Fasteners (McMasters Beach), Team Navy (South Curl Curl), FGI (Bilgola) & DKG (Elouera) qualified for the final which also consisted of a double race. Despite a late charge from Ettamogah Mob (Avoca), Team Navy (South Curl Curl) came away with victory in a tightly contested final. Team Navy (South Curl Curl) with two event wins now dominate the series point score.

The interstate feature race saw Men's crews representing South Australia, Queensland, Victoria & New South Wales compete against Team Navy (South Curl Curl) representing Women's surf rowers in a handicap event. To a huge ovation from onlookers Team Navy (South Curl Curl) took out the race against their male counterparts.
