The fifth annual
ATIVO Ocean Thunder surf boat series commenced Saturday, 14th November, 2009 on Sydney's Dee Why beach on a glorious Sydney spring day in small one metre conditions.
The even conditions ensured the Men's and Women's preliminary rounds were the most hotly contested in the events history with a number of crews claiming victory, some in one hundredth of a second time frames.
The men's morning rounds were won by
ATIVO A (Austinmer) with new sweep Mark Bluey at the helm. The reigning ATIVO Ocean Thunder champions continued their run of consistent results with three wins and two seconds from the five rounds,
Hog's Breath Cafe (Mona Vale) fired a warning shot across the bow of all competitors with four wins with
Reilly & Sons Food Services (Bungan Beach) showing class that had seen their odds slashed from $21.00 into $6.00 with three wins.
The Women's morning preliminary rounds were very fast with
Southern Fasteners (McMasters Beach) and
Team Navy (South Curl Curl) showing their class with three wins a piece from the four rounds.
The Men's event proceeded through a number of both pointscore and elimination rounds before
FGI (Bilgola),
Reilly & Sons Food Services (Bungan Beach),
ATIVO A (Austinmer),
XXXX Gold (Dee Why),
Viatek (Dixon Park) &
Hog's Breath Cafe (Mona Vale) lined up for the final. Shortly after rounding the buoys at the halfway mark it was apparent the final was going to be won by
Reilly & Sons Food Services (Bungan Beach),
Hogs Breath Cafe (Mona Vale) or the fast finishing
XXX Gold (Dee Why).
In a dramatic climax, the
Hog's Breath Cafe (Mona Vale) crew won the sprint up the beach to claim victory ahead of
Reilly & Sons Food Services (Bungan Beach) and
XXXX Gold (Dee Why).
Hog's Breath Cafe (Mona Vale) become the sixth crew to win an event in the five year history of the series, only the second winner from Sydney's Northern Beaches.

The Women's final was an eagerly anticipated affair with
Ettamagah Mob (Avoca) considered the one's most likely to be able to topple the dominant
Southern Fasteners (McMasters Beach) and
Team Navy (South Curl Curl) crews. The highly decorated trio were joined in the final by
FGI (Bilgola),
Grant Wilkinson (Elouera) and
Premier Building Group (Mona Vale).
Team Navy (South Curl Curl) showed their absolute class dominating the final ahead of
Premier Building Group (Mona Vale) and
Ettamogah Mob (Avoca).
