Round 1 - History Repeats... |
|
ATIVO (Austinmer) looking for a remarkable third straight series win have laid down the gauntlet to their rivals with a remarkable come from behind victory in the first round of the ATIVO Ocean Thunder series held on Saturday 8 November 2008 in small surf conditions at Sydney's Dee Why Beach. Despite fielding a new, younger crew, Jack Pattison's ATIVO crew finished the qualifying rounds in second position behind XXXX Gold (Dee Why) and qualified for the final along with Sandran Properties (Whale Beach), York Forter (Dixon Park) and Edwards & Orr Real Estate (Mona Vale). With fifty metres to go Sandran Properties swept by Howard Christie seemed to have the winning position covered then in a remarkable display of guts and tenacity, Jack Pattison's young crew pulled down the same wave as Sandran and won the run up the beach, pipping Sandran Properties by .2 of a second. In the women's series, Manly Warringah Credit Union (Queencliff) continued their dominance of the event by comfortably taking out the final ahead of local rivals Edwards & Orr Real Estate (Mona Vale), XXXX Angels (Dee Why) & Ettamogah Mob (Bilgola) Men's Finishing Positions:

Ocean Thunder - Entitled to Bragging Rights |
|
After 3 years and over $1M spent on television production the Ocean Thunder program is finally returning an investment for the sport of Surf boats. Thanks to those team stake holders, who have become our licensed team partners, we now have in stock over 12 hours of high quality, action packed surf boat footage. Although we enjoy seeing our beloved sport of surf boat racing here in Australia we are still a long way on the back shelves to be recognized as a national major sporting property, not like AFL, NRL, Cricket, Horse Racing and the new kid on the block, and racing up the charts, V8 Supercars. Even if we secured a few million dollars and prime time TV, we would be so lucky to hit the top 20. Purely by luck however we are attracting a curious global market, Ocean Thunder has been produced here in Australia for international export and all our programs are reaching an untapped television viewing audience, in some cases the English speaking commentary has switched to foreign language. Our unique surf sport, a true Aussie icon, is having an impact to the world through our 2 year distribution rights agreement with major European producer “Powerhouse Productions” handling the media exposure. This summer in the Northern Hemisphere, Ocean Thunder 2007 and 2008 with a total of 8 x 1 hour episodes will be featured internationally, a total potential worldwide audience 365+ million. |

NZ Piha Boaties Lead the Challenge into France |
|
Piha “A” senior surfboat crew will travel to France this September to take on the best at the Ocean Thunder Internatioanl Championships in picturesque Biarritz.
These boys have been rowing together for many years and are brothers in arms - but its not always smooth sailing – five men in close quarters in stressful racing and training situations aint always pretty!
The Piha A crew boasts a reputation as fearless Big Wave specialists; now its time to walk the walk not just talk the talk - the possibility of monster surf at the world-renowned French resort of Biarritz is very real – and of course we all know what waves Piha can turn on …
Piha crew will tackle the gun Australian crews and for the first time ever have a crack at the British, French, and other European crews at the Champs. (They’re not so worried about the French though; it’s their Olympic Coxless 4 Crew who have very little wave experience – although if it’s a flat day the Kiwis are in big trouble).

Surfboat News

Take 150 rowers, add three feet of rolling surf spiced by a strong cross-onshore breeze, season with barefaced cheek, throw in the occasional back-shoot and roll-over and you have all the ingredients you need for that classic dish: The UK Open Surfboat Championships, held this year on Devon’s north coast at Saunton Sands on Saturday 28 July. |
